FAQs

Q: How can I keep up to date on my child’s assignments and grades?

A:  Log onto www.edline.net. If you have not received your activation code, you may ask any one of your child’s teachers for it. This is a very useful site! You may view all of your child’s grades and have access to any information the teachers have posted. This is also helpful if your child is absent. If you have any questions, you can also email the teachers from the site.

Q: How much homework will my child have each night?

A: This will vary depending on the teacher. Most science and math classes will have homework assigned every class. This could range from practice problems and/or reading assignments to studying for a test or quiz. We ask that you encourage your child to do the homework the night it was assigned. This way they will be able to ask questions about the assignment before they have to turn it in.

Q: How can my child get involved in sports and/or activities?

A: Your child can contact the coach or advisor directly. Sport practices and tryouts start on August 15th. Your child must have a physical to participate! If you have any questions on a particular sport’s practice schedule you can email the athletic director, Matt Roberts, matthew.roberts@hcps.org . Throughout the year, activities and clubs will be available for your child to join.

Q: What if my child needs some extra help in certain subjects?

A: There are several options available. The SMA offers a study hall on Tuesday’s and Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30. This is a great opportunity for your child to get a jump start on their homework or to seek help on assignments. There are often student tutors present to help their classmates who have questions. Also, most of the SMA teachers stay after school. We encourage your child to set up a time to meet with their teachers to receive some extra help after school.

Q: What is the best way to contact my child’s teachers if I have a question or concern?

A: The best way to contact parents is through email. Most teachers check their email everyday and will do their best to provide a prompt response. If the problem needs immediate attention I would contact Donna Clem, donna.clem@hcps.org . You may also call AHS at 410-273-5500 and the secretaries will leave a message for the intended teacher.

Q: We do not live close to the school so on days when my child has sports practice at 4:00, he cannot come home first. Is there anywhere he can stay while he waits for practice to start?

A: All students who stay after school must be with a teacher, advisor, or coach. Your child is welcome to come to the study hall if his practice falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday. Most SMA teachers are here after school so your child could stay in one of their rooms. The SMA computer lab is also open after school during certain times so your child may also stay there. There are many students of the SMA involved in sports and activities after school.  Your child may have a teammate that lives close by. Many parents also get together and share car pooling duties.
